Ask Joshua - Where can I find original art for less?
Hi Joshua,
I love art. And sometimes I have a budget to purchase original works. And sometimes I don't. For those who are working with a tight budget but still want original art on their walls, do you have any tips?
Crys - Washington, D.C.
Hi Crys,
That’s an excellent question! I know it can be a challenge to find original art when you’re on a limited budget. Even prints can be quite expensive! It will typically take a little more legwork and a little bit of luck, but I’ve been lucky myself with these sources.
- Farmers market. I’m not sure what your local farmers market is like but in my experience, some farmer markets have a mix of food stuffs plus local arts and crafts. Often these artists are starting out and trying to get their name out there, so you can often find pieces at good prices. Plus, since you’re dealing directly with the artist, and not a third party who’s taking a cut, you may be able to negotiate down.
- Art Fair. This is like the farmers market, but they happen less often. This option is a little less budget friendly because it does tend to attract more established artists following the art fair circuit, but you may get lucky and find a good deal.
- Thrift stores. Some thrift stores do have some really amazing original art. Stuff at thrift stores often have quite a story how they end up there! This one is dependent on luck, but you can sometimes find some great steals in thrift stores.
- Etsy. Many artists sell their work via Etsy. It’s an open market, so there’s lots of options. You can find some well priced art there.
- Chairish. This site sells more than just art, but their selection is quite large. They do have both prints and originals; make sure you’re looking at the originals. The prices are quite reasonable and they have a large selection at lower prices points that are very budget friendly (even a few below $100 for originals!).
I wish you the best of luck in your search for art that you love and loves your wallet.
