Ask Joshua - Bar or counter stools….What’s the difference?

Hi Joshua,

I recently purchased my first home and currently am shopping for some furniture. I’m lost on the difference between counter and bar stools for my kitchen island. I grew up in a home that didn’t have a kitchen island and didn’t have stools. I didn’t realize that there are two different stool sizes and I am not sure which stools I should purchase. Please advise.

Thank you,

Erica - Boise, Idaho

Hi Erica,

First of all, congratulations on your new home! I’ll explain the difference between counter and bar stools. The standard kitchen counter height is 36 inches. If your kitchen island is the same as your counter height in the rest of the kitchen, then go with a counter stool. Bar stools are when your kitchen might include a kitchen bar, which is standardized at 42”. The kitchen bar is often where you might simply stand to eat if you’re grabbing a quick bite or snack.

I also need to point something important to know about the stools before you make a purchase. These are standards, and of course could be different than your home. Also, some manufactures aren’t always so careful on what they call a counter or bar stool and there may be little difference. Always double check the seat height of any stool you like and ensure it will fit and be comfortable for you by measuring from the floor to the underside of your counter/bar.

Good luck!

Joshua
