Joshua's Top Picks - Christmas Décor

Joshua's Top Picks - Christmas Décor

It’s hard to believe that the Christmas season is upon us once again! Last week, I stopped by my favorite shopping mall, University Village, in Seattle to pick up a few things and noticed that many home decoration stores already set up their holidays displays. I won’t be surprised if some day I’ll be seeing Christmas decorations setup next to Easter bunnies. Needless to say, I decided to check it all out. I was inspired by some pieces and decided to do a little design here using some of my favorite things that I saw! I hope you enjoy!

I personally dislike the traditional Christmas colors of red and green, so I went a route using a color scheme using black, gold, raw wood, and ivory. Not only is this color scheme all-year-round friendly and not tied to a specific season, it works really well with different design styles such as California Casual, Scandinavian, and Modern Farmhouse. I know that perhaps black as a Christmas color may sound like something straight out of “Nightmare Before Christmas”, but you can do it in a way that it’s depressing or dark and can really elevate the sophistication of the space by mixing in other colors and materials. I do have some green here, by the way, so I’m not entirely Scroogy.

When it comes to styling your fireplace mantel for the holidays - I’d suggest keeping it simple. If you’ve got some art or a mirror above your mantel (like you should instead of a TV!), switch it out temporarily for a beautiful wreath. If your fireplace mantel already have nail on the wall above that you use to hang the mirror or framed art/photo - you can switch it to the wreath. I’m using a really chic grey/white one made of feathers. Don’t clutter the shelf itself with décor. Some garland perhaps and a couple objects. Stockings are a must and don’t forget ones for the pets too! If you’re going with natural garland, be careful here about it drying out and potentially becoming a fire hazard, depending on your fireplace configuration. Use some common sense here please.

If you love pillows as much as I do then definitely add some holiday specific pillows in the color scheme you’ve chosen. You can get away with some fun, glitzy, or overdone pillows during this time of year…so have some fun with it!

Lastly, let’s talk about decorating the Christmas tree. I know we all love to decorate our tree with ornaments that mean a lot to us such as from our travels, gifts from our loved ones, something from our childhood, and something else that is also very special to you. A few years ago, I decided to give our Christmas tree a new look and picked out the ornaments that we already had that still fit within the new style. Some of the other ornaments we kept for sentimental reasons. A second tree using those can also be fun, or perhaps a small ornament display to go on a shelf or sideboard.

I personally selected these pieces that caught my eye and thought you might want to shop this look if you’re inspired by the design. Please click on the pictures below!
