Ask Joshua - Coffee Table...Square or Rectangle?
Hi Joshua,
I have a question about coffee tables. Is there a general rule for using a square table versus a rectangular table in a living or family room? I have a sectional that is symmetrical, so I could use either. I like the idea of the square table for family use like puzzles, games or pizza, but the rectangular is more compact for the space. Any suggestions for how to decide?
Thanks,
Judy, Oregon
Hi Judy,
Thanks for asking a really great question regarding coffee table shapes. There isn’t a single easy answer to this as the coffee table shape should vary depending on the sectional size and arrangement type. In cases of a very large sectional, you can even double up and have 2 smaller square coffee tables. This can give you more freedom for arrangement and can be more playful.
Here are my tips for which coffee table shape works best with various type of sectionals:
- L-shaped sectional - square coffee table
- Small sectional with a chaise - square coffee table
- Medium to larger sized sectional with a chaise or non-symmetrical L-shaped - rectangle coffee table OR two small square coffee tables
- U-shaped sectional - square or round coffee table
- Sectional with chaises on both sides - square coffee table
- Sectional that is L-shaped, yet with a chaise - square coffee table
So, for your situation I’d recommend a square coffee table. It also sounds like that is the best choice for your family functionally.
I hope this helps! Good luck!
