One Thing Every Kitchen Should Have

The kitchen is often the heart of the house and a frequent place where you may be spending a lot of time cooking as well as entertaining and socializing with family and friends. Having a good kitchen design is very important to make sure the kitchen is functional for how you use it daily, it’s also a critical component of your house value. I’ve been designing lots of kitchens for my clients from simple refreshing the look of the kitchen with paint and new knobs to complete guts and building from scratch. After doing all these projects, I had a little “ah ha!” moment and realized that one little often overlooked piece that every modern kitchen should have.

Mid-century modern style kitchen designed by Joshua Jones, JJones Design Co.

Years ago, when I was visiting my parents from college over winter break - I was helping my mom clean the kitchen, I’m a good son, and I noticed something new next to the kitchen faucet. I asked my mom what that button was for. She answered they recently installed a push button garbage disposal because she got tired of having to walk across the kitchen to the wall where the switch was located. I thought it was a smart and time saving idea to have that for the kitchen.

Sadly, I’ve totally forgot about that until not too long ago - I’ve been recently reminded about the frustration of inconveniently located disposal switches in my current apartment kitchen. The dishwasher is in between, so while washing dishes and loading the machine, if I have to run the disposal, I have to awkwardly bend and reach across the counter with dripping wet hands since the dishwasher door is in the way. I’ve been thinking - wow this system is so not functional for my daily needs! This reminded me about the push button variety, which is installed usually right next to the faucet.

I realized that some of my past kitchen projects I worked on it could have benefited from that too. I regret now that I didn’t think about it in the moment since it would have been a perfect solution for those designs, especially the kitchen with an island. Now, I definitely keep that in mind for designing kitchens for my clients. Manufacturers make finish options as well that match all the other pieces of the sink faucet system so I don’t have to worry about an element that looks out of place with the design.

What do you think of having a push down garbage disposal for your kitchen? Will that help your kitchen function better for you? I’d also love to hear if there are other little kitchen features that you love about your kitchen or would love to have that you think are often overlooked! Discuss here in the comments.
