A Scandinavian Style Dorm
It’s June and it’s graduation time for students. Congratulations are in order for all of you or your friends and loved ones that may have graduated recently. For those that are planning on going off to college and live in dorms in the fall, it’s actually a good time now to start planning. I think it’s really important for people to express their personal style not only with their looks, but also through their space as it can be centering and grounding to create a space that you’re going to live in that energizes you, relaxes you, and can feel like your own home….even if it’s within the confines of a typically drab and dreary dorm room. So, in light of that, I’ve created a dorm room design series with three distinct style that I think can work well in a dorm room space. Let’s start with Scandinavian!
When it comes to a Scandinavian style, I know most people immediately think of IKEA. While IKEA has some great pieces that also have the double benefit of being dependably affordable for those cash-strapped college student or those recently post-college, tt doesn’t have to be IKEA or anything like IKEA to represent Scandinavian style. Scandinavian style means to keep the space feeling simple and cozy and utilizing natural, organic, and textural touches. Typically it tends towards whites and neutrals with some highlight colors and finishes. Dorm room furniture tends toward woods, so that already works with Scandinavian. This kind of style can also help brighten up dark rooms that may have limited natural lighting; it can really help the space feel more bright and airy.
I came up with these dorm design elements that are a little expensive looking (while not being expensive) and stylish. I was also mindful that these pieces can also transition into a first apartment after moving out of a dorm situation. The light, which my partner loves, is really affordable at just under $100, while I’ve seen lights that are awfully similar at places like Restoration Hardware for well over $1000.
See the art gallery wall in this design? It’s actually digital art you can purchase on Etsy and print it out at any sizes you want and then frame them. You can get typically get inexpensive frames at Target, Wayfair, Amazon, or local thrift stores for these prints. Keep in mind, a lot of dorms don’t allow nails in the wall, so think about sticky tape or those 3M Command style hooks.
If your dorm is large enough to create a lounge area, which can also be created by lofting your bed, I’d recommend getting one or two to get a pair of lounge chairs so you can use it to relax or hang out with your roommate or friends.
