Ask Joshua: Feeling Gloomy? Brighten Up Your Dark Room with These Expert Tips!
Hi Joshua,
My partner and I are thinking about giving our living/dining area a new vibe. He’s really into the idea of switching things up with dark wall colors since he's over the whole neutral look. I mean, I totally get the appeal of dark colors—they’re chic and all, but I’m worried it might make the space feel too gloomy, especially since it’s already kind of dark in the winter. Our windows face south, so we get some nice light from late morning until late afternoon, but it still gets pretty dim early during the colder months. Is there a way to rock the dark walls without the space feeling like a cave? Any tips to balance it out so it doesn’t bring me down?
Thanks so much!

Hi Allyson,
Thank you for reaching out with your question about working with dark wall colors in your living/dining space, and for sharing photos of the area. It's a common concern that dark walls might make a room feel overly dark, but there are several strategies to ensure your space feels bright and lively while embracing those richer tones. Here are my tips:
Opt for Lighter Flooring: Choosing a lighter flooring color can significantly brighten your space. Light floors reflect both natural and artificial light, helping to illuminate the room despite the dark walls.
Incorporate Light or Bright Rugs: A well-chosen rug can not only brighten the space but also create a balanced look. Consider rugs in lighter hues or vibrant patterns to offset the darkness of the walls.
Use Light Window Treatments: Light-colored draperies can soften the overall feel of dark walls. By selecting brighter window treatments, you can reduce the intensity of the dark colors and bring a more cheerful vibe to your space.
Display Large Artwork or a Gallery Wall: Art can transform the feel of a room. Opt for large pieces or a gallery wall featuring artworks with light tones. Dark walls provide a dramatic backdrop that makes artwork pop, enhancing the visual appeal and balancing the room's color palette.
Select Fun and Bright Furniture: Furniture in neutral or bold colors can make a significant impact. Bright, playful furniture adds a lively vibe to the room, complementing the dark walls and preventing the space from feeling somber.
Install a Statement Light Fixture: A striking light fixture can serve as a focal point and illuminate your space beautifully at night. Choose a design that stands out and complements the dark walls.
Choose High-Lumen Lamps: To ensure your space is well-lit, especially after sunset, opt for lamps with high lumen output. This will keep your space bright and welcoming, even with darker wall colors.
I’ve applied these tips in a project for my San Francisco apartment during the One Room Challenge in Spring 2020, which transformed the space without it feeling like a cave. I hope you find these suggestions helpful as you plan your makeover with your partner. Feel free to get in touch if you need more detailed advice or assistance.
Best of luck with your living/dining room transformation!
Warmly,
Joshua
