Ask Joshua: How to Discover Your Perfect Art Style for Your Home
Hi Joshua,
I purchased my home two years ago, and decorating it has been so much fun! I'm almost done, but now I'm stuck because I have no idea what kind of art I want for my home or what would work best in each room. I believe my design style is modern eclectic since I like a mix of different eras and some whimsical items along with bold colors and patterns. Some rooms are painted in very dark colors to create a bold and moody vibe with pops of color.
Growing up, I wasn't exposed to much art, so I feel a bit lost when it comes to choosing pieces for my home. I don't want to have empty walls, but I'm not a fan of photo collages like many people I know. I want something different. Could you please advise me on how to discover what kind of art I like and what would suit my home?
Thanks!
Molly - Cleveland, Ohio
Hi Molly,
Thank you for writing in with such a great question about discovering the kind of art that resonates with you and your home. I understand the challenge of finding the right art pieces that speak to you and fit your space. Here are some ways to figure it out:
Visit Art Fairs, Shows, or Local Galleries: Exploring the beautiful works created by local artists can be incredibly inspiring. If you find any art pieces that you feel a connection with and that fit your budget, consider purchasing them for your home.
Explore Online Art Shops: If you're unable to find the right art locally, there are plenty of great online art shops like Etsy, Minted, Artfully Walls, Saatchi Art, and Art.com. These platforms offer an amazing variety, but the options can be overwhelming. To simplify your search, try narrowing it down by focusing on one category, such as abstract, landscape, or photography, or by selecting art based on color schemes. The best part is that these sites often have art pieces to fit any budget.
Collect Art While Traveling: If you're someone who enjoys traveling, whether across the country or internationally, consider exploring the art scenes in the places you visit. If you find a piece that catches your eye and you fall in love with it, don’t hesitate to bring it home. This is something I often do, and it’s a wonderful way to expand your personal art collection.
I hope you find these suggestions helpful. If you need additional assistance in finding the right art pieces, choosing the correct sizes, or arranging a gallery wall, feel free to get in touch with me here.
Best of luck,
Joshua
