Ask Joshua: Stylish Armoires That Solve Your Foyer Closet Problems

Hi Joshua,

I recently relocated to New York City and moved into this charming 1920s apartment building. It’s got all the vintage character I love, but no closet space in the entry area! I’m trying to figure out how to make the space work for me—a spot where I can stash coats, hats, purses, and shoes without it looking like a total mess.

My boyfriend suggested we check out storage cabinets from IKEA, and while they’re practical, they’re just not my vibe. I’m more into eclectic, boho-chic pieces that feel unique and have their own story. I’d also rather avoid wall hooks for hanging stuff—I want everything tucked away to keep the space looking clean and organized.

The entry is about 8' x 6', so there’s definitely room for some kind of cool storage cabinet where we can hang coats. I just have no idea where to find something that’s both functional and fits my style.

Would love your advice and any recommendations!

Thanks a ton,
Anne – NYC

Hi Anne,

Thank you for reaching out with such a great question about your foyer! I absolutely love the character of 1920s buildings. Having lived in a couple of charming 1920s apartments myself, I completely understand their unique appeal—and the challenges that come with limited storage space.

The size of your foyer is definitely manageable, and I think an armoire would be a perfect solution. Not only will it add character and complement your eclectic/bohemian style, but it will also keep your space organized by providing hidden storage for coats, hats, purses, and shoes.

To help you out, I’ve put together a clickable digital shopping list featuring six stylish armoires that would work beautifully in your foyer. Each one includes essential features like a clothes rod, shelves, and drawers to meet different storage needs while maintaining a clean and tidy look. These armoires were chosen with both practicality and style in mind, so I hope you find something you love!

If none of these feel like the perfect fit, the vendors I’ve linked to offer additional armoire options, so feel free to explore and find the one that works best for you.

Best of luck,

Joshua
