Joshua's Top Picks - Outdoor Living Space 2022
As the weather gets warmer, summer is coming sooner than we realize. It’s a good time to start thinking about updating your outdoor living space into a place that you would want to spend more time in enjoying the beautiful weather and entertaining guests.
Transitional style outdoor living space.
When I was in Astoria, Oregon - Jeffry and I stopped in a really fun store in downtown Astoria that carried a lot of unique outdoor furniture pieces and accessories. I was inspired and started looking around to see what’s new this year in outdoor furniture trends and accessories. A few pieces caught my interest so I’ve put together a mood board to present this little outdoor living space design.

These pieces are all selected to work in an outdoor space that might be a little on the small side, which can work for a small backyard for a single family home or even adapted to work with an outdoor space for a townhouse or brownstone. When thinking about doing outdoor design, I treat it as just about any other room in that you want to “live” in the space. I then incorporate comfortable furniture, an outdoor fireplace, dining area, and plenty of seating to entertain guests.
You can see that I included screens, which are a great way to address the privacy issues from neighbors or urban areas and blocks any potential eyesores next door that you can’t control or change. Screens don’t need to be bland, they can be a canvas for outdoor art, hanging sculpture, or wall mounted planters for some greenery.
If you’ve got the structural support from a mature tree or balcony or deck above, you can add in hanging chairs for something really cozy and fun.
If your outdoor space is large enough to have a proper living room setup with a dining area, it’s a great way to entertain your guests for some al fresco dining. If you get a chill in the evening where you live or you just like the idea of a fireplace regardless of the weather, I found an amazing portable outdoor fireplace that’s got substantial heft to anchor a space without needing anything built-in and can be moved around!
Lastly, a perfect outdoor living space should have PLENTY of plants to add life and beauty to the space. You can’t go wrong with that!
