Ask Joshua - Is Terrazzo Tile Still Popular?
Hi Joshua,
I’m flipping this cute little house and my boyfriend and I are debating about whether we should put in terrazzo tile as the kitchen backsplash. The issue is that my boyfriend is against it and believes that is outdated since it was popular back in the 70s. I told him that the tile is popular again and he said it is a fad. I love the way the tile looks and feel that it matches the character of the house. Can you please help us to settle our debate and which direction to go forward with?
Thank you,
Kate - Portland, Oregon
Hi Kate,
Thank you for reaching out and asking a great question about if terrazzo is still popular or not. Terrazzo was a big deal back in the 60’s and 70’s, but reintroduced with a more modern look just a few years ago. As right now, I’ve noticed it’s popularity is starting to fade out which I believe is due to people getting little too carried away with over utilizing it, without really giving proper thought of whether it fits the space and giving it proper balance.
So, for your situation, after seeing the photos you sent me, I’m in agreement with you that terrazzo tile would look great for your kitchen backsplash since it seems you are going for a little bit of a retro funky vibe in the space. I found an example of this kitchen that is somewhat similar to the finishes that you’re planning to do and it might help give your boyfriend a better idea of what it could look like when done right. I’d recommend you to get lighter patterned one without looking too busy in order to help you to get this house sold quick.
Warmly,
Joshua
