Ask Joshua - Should I finish my new basement now or do it later?
Hi Joshua,
My husband and I purchased a new home in a new development. Our new house is currently under construction and recently our builder asked us about the basement if we like to get it done at the same time as the house or leave the basement unfinished to be finished later. It would cost us around additional $18,000 to get it done which would includes a full bathroom, wet bar, bonus room and bedroom. We are debating if we should take advantage of it now and worry about decorating these spaces later on the road. This is our first home purchase and we’ve had no experiences with remodel projects, so we’re wondering which would make more financial sense. Should we go for it now or wait and do it later? Can you please advise?
Thank you,
Briana - Denver, Colorado
Hi Briana,
Thank you for writing in with a great question about whether should you finish your new basement now or do it later. I know a lot of homeowners purchasing new construction are faced with this dilemma. Based on what you’ve shared - I’d recommend going ahead and finishing the basement now for a few reasons:
- The cost will actually be cheaper because you’ve got contractors, labor on site, and the crew already has access to all the same materials used in the rest of your home construction. Putting all this together later will cost you more money.
- Even if you don’t have a design plan or plan for usage in the basement now, you can easily update the basement down the road without having to do major construction.
- Having a finished basement is a great selling point for your house and increases it’s value for when you decide to sell it one day.
I hope you find this helpful for you to make a decision on which direction you like to take to complete your basement now or not.
Best of luck,
Joshua
